The Recreation Department offers hundreds of popular programs, classes and activities for all school ages to adults and seniors at the John A. Anderson Recreation Center/ Anthony T. Brunetta Pavilion on North Oceanside Rd. New programs added recently include fencing, toddler music classes, competitive gymnastics, new birthday party themes, zumba, bricks for kids etc. The Recreation Center houses two gymnasiums, three nursery school rooms, an auditorium, a workout room, meeting rooms, a large children’s playground, the Nancy Cottrell Memorial tennis courts, a passive park and soccer field. The department has operated a nursery school program for more than 40 years, which provides a nurturing environment to prepare children for kindergarten. The program has three state of the art pre-k rooms, and indoor and outdoor playground facilities. Hundreds of residents participate in the summer playground which has run every year since 1954. The summer basketball programs for youths and adults included 140 teams in 2011.The spring, summer, and snowflake softball leagues provided spectators and players evenings of recreational fun with competition for men and women in eight divisions. Popular annual events also bring out thousands of residents who collect goodies at the Easter Egg Hunt, march in the Halloween Ragamuffin Parade, enjoy the Christmas tree lighting, the community Chanukah party, Breakfast with Santa’s Helpers and 10k-5k Family Fun Run.
